Split has until recently been often perceived as a transit city - a place tourists just pass through to get to their final destination - mostly Dalmatian islands. In recent years this has greatly changed and Split has become recognized as a tourist destination that has a lot to offer to its visitors.

As part of its rich offer, Split also has one wonderful vegetarian restaurant for all those who care about a healthy diet.
The restaurant Makrovega is located at the address Leština 2, which is only a few minutes walk from Split waterfront. The vegetarian restaurant in Split was open in 2003 with the aim of improving healthy diet, particularly vegetarianism and macrobiotics and to improve the quality of life, social development and environmental protection. The restaurant practices intuitive cooking which means that the menu offer changes daily depending on the season, the weather changes and personal creativity of the chef. They are constantly working on new knowledge about a healthy diet that is immediately applicable in the kitchen.

When preparing meals, they exclusively use organic grains, legumes and fresh vegetables and strictly avoid any additives, refined products, GM foods, white sugar or white flour. Regardless of which meal is chosen from the rich selection of Makrovega, you can be sure it will be freshly prepared. Within the restaurant there is no smoking and liquors are prohibited and this is the only oasis of peace and health in the city of Split of this kind.

Following the example of Makrovega and the growing interest in natural food, in 2011 a healthy cafe, Upcaffe, was open which is at the address Domovinskog rata 29a. In the busy, commercial area of town offers visitors a multitude of dishes prepared with organic food. So every day in Upcaffe with superior Bazzara coffee, organic teas, cold-pressed fruit and vegetable juices you can taste vegetable soup with beans and algae, hemp burgers, tofu, seitan and tempeh sandwiches, vegetable cream soup, vegetable rice with brown rice, burritos, pancerote, kayu unleavened sandwiches or sweeten up with Upcaffe natural and healthy ice cream and cakes.
