Health care on your holidays in Croatia - People who are covered by health insurance in their country, during their stay in Croatia have the right to use the emergency health care. Most of the EU countries are covered by "reciprocal care" agreements between Croatia and EU countries. Tourists from other countries need to check their private health plans carefully before they arrive in Croatia.


If there are no agreements in terms of health care, than doctor or hospital will issue bills and according to the law in Croatia it can be 100% higher than prices which are applied for domestic insured person.

Health insurance for foreigners in Croatia:

  • For citizens from:  Austria, Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Netherlands, Belgium, Romania, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro those rules are applied:

Before using health care it is important to issue certificates by the regional office for Croatian Health Insurance. Exceptionally, in case of emergency it is possible to use the health care with certificates that proves health insurance from the country of residence (in two languages).

A patient can use health services that cannot be eliminated by the planned return to the country of residence, including prescription for medicine. Applied prices are the same as for Croatian citizens, and that is Croatian Health insurance covering. The patient is only paying a small part of participation.

  • For citizens of: Hungary, Poland and Great Britain those rules are applied:

Before using health care patients have to show a passport (or only the ID for citizens from Hungary).
A patient can use health services that cannot be eliminated by the planned return to the country of residence, including prescription for medicine. Applied prices are the same as for Croatian citizens, and that is Croatian Health insurance covering, the patient is only paying a small part of participation. Insured persons from Great Britain have a right to health care on a larger scale.

  • For citizens of  Slovakia these rules are applied:

Citizens of Slovakia can use health care in Croatia but on their own cost. Prices which are applied are tghe same as for Croatian citizens, and the patient is covering all by himself.

  • For citizens of  Switzerland these rules are applied:

Health insurance is only covering persons who are in Croatia for business purposes, not on holidays!

So make sure to get extra travel insurance before you go on holidays in Croatia.
