Getting to Split from Zagreb

If you need to travel from Zagreb to Split during your holiday in Croatia, you might find our small “how to” guide quite useful. The guide is of course also valid if you travel from Split to Zagreb.

By Car: the fastest travel route by car is the Croatian highway between Zagreb and Split. The travel distance on this route is 409 km and the estimated travel time is 4h 7 minutes. On the highway toll fees apply; currently the toll price is about 25 euro for a normal vehicle. If you wish to travel on roads where no toll applies there is an alternative route via Karlovac, Slunj, Gracac and Knin. This route has a travel distance of about 370 km and an estimated travel time of about 5h 10m.

By Bus: Zagreb and Split are very well connected by bus. Daily there is more than 20 departures between the two cities. Travel time by bus ranges from 5 to 7 hours, depending on Bus Company and travel route. The price for a bus ticket also varies depending on departure time, route and company; usually ticket prices range from 20-30 Euros for a one way ticket. NOTE: if you land at the Zagreb airport and wish to continue to Split, you first have to take the airport bus to main bus station in Zagreb and then continue from there on.

By Train: there are several daily train departures from Zagreb to Split. Travel time ranges from 6h 30m to almost 10 h. The last daily departure is a night train with sleeping cabins. You can see all train connections between Zagreb and Split here.

By Plane: Croatia airlines has several daily departures between Zagreb and Split. The flight time is about 40 minutes. In the summer months it is advisable to book ahead.

When you arrive in Split, you have an airport bus to the city centre which departures shortly after the arrival (you will have time enough to collect your luggage).

Travel tips Zagreb to Split:

If the trip form Zagreb to Split is a part of a Croatia itinerary, I would suggest you also consider visiting some of the following sights on the way:

  • National park Plitvice Lakes, best option is to stay overnight.
  • Zadar, you can take early bus from Zagreb to Zadar and then spend a few hours seeing the old town before continuing to Split.
  • Sibenik, Primosten and Trogir are also highly recommended places to stop.
