Walking tour to the southern side of Marjan hill starts along the northern side of the St. Francis church on Riva, where the road rises towards Varos, a picturesque historical suburb situated on the slopes of Marjan hill. Many typical houses with roofs covered with natural stone, originally inhabited by local workers, agricultural labourers and fisherman, can be found in this part of the city.

The road through Varos should take you to the first belvedere on Marjan, in front of an old Jewish cemetery which dates back to the 16th century, with an unforgettable view of Split and surroundings. On clear days you can see as far as to the island of Vis and south towards Vruje. Here you can take some really beautiful photos before you continue your walking tour. There is also a cafe bar where you can have a drink or two, relax and enjoy the magical view of entire Split "on the palm of your hand".

A pleasant stroll situated all along the southern side of Marjan hill will bring you to the Romanesque church of St Nicolas the Traveller from the 18th century. Following the stairs beyond the church will lead you to the first hilltop on Marjan, with the Zoo and the Museum of Natural History in front.

After that you can choose to climbe down the stairs, back to the church of St Nicolas the Traveller where the gravel stroll takes you all the way to the 15th century Chapel of St Jerome with hermit caves and than it descends towards the tip of the Marjan peninsula and to the small church of St George.

You can also choose to climbe to the top of Marjan hill from the Zoo, following the stairs. From this highest point of Marjan hill you have a beautiful view, perfect for relaxation and photo shooting. You can sit on the wooden benches, enjoy the fresh air and meditate.
